A selection from the work of the Dutch-Hungarian photographer Satijn Panyigay (b. 1988, Nijmegen) is on display in the former Council Chamber on the first floor of Museum W. Satijn captures in her photos traces left behind by life before time erases them.
Through photography, Panyigay works with uninhabited spaces, architecture, and seeming emptiness. Her latest projects reveal empty exhibition spaces of leading Dutch museums. For Gaze Into Space, works from different series are brought together for the first time. Panyigay’s specific attention to light and shadow plays an essential role in her work. Capturing architectural spaces, Panyigay’s photography borders abstraction.
The work of Satijn Panyigay has a sober and clear structure. Through her eyes you see that beauty can be found in the emptiness, the transience and the imperfect. The photos invite you to slow down, feel space to do nothing for a while, look longer and wander through the image.
The smallest details are important in the image, such as a socket, the holes in the wall, a sticker that has been left behind or a stain. In all their insignificance, they are convincingly part of the story. In these tranquil photos of empty exhibition spaces, the walls themselves play the leading role. In her work it is not so much what you see but the way it is presented through the specific use of radiance and dim, rhythmic lines and corners that create the feeling of tension or silence. In strict but poetic analog color images Satijn Panyigay traces presence in seemingly empty spaces.
Past exhibitions of Satijn Panyigay include Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam, NL); Fotomuseum Den Haag (The Hague, NL); Museum Tot Zover (Amsterdam, NL); Villa Mondriaan (Winterswijk, NL). Her work is in the collections at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Museum Tot Zover, Museum Van Bommel Van Dam, and Museum W, among others.
Museum W is the municipal museum of Weert. The museum has been closed for the past 3 years due to a major renovation and restoration. This period was also used to recalibrate the substantive vision and thus prepare the museum for the future. The doors have since been reopened to the public since May 3.
