Paris Photo 2021
Solo presentation | Curiosa sector
11-14 November | Grand Palais Éphémère
Florida. The sunshine state. The political swing-state. The swampland paradise. The refuge of excess. The tourist fantasy. The real estate deception. The sub-tropical fever dream. The place where image and reality become inseparable.
— Anastasia Samoylova
Samoylova’s work explores notions of environmentalism, consumerism, and the picturesque. In her latest project Floridas, she documents a layered portrait of contemporary Florida and establishes a dialogue with the oeuvre of Walker Evans, employing a language similar to his detached and laconic imagery. She sees and shows Florida as a condensed version of the US. With her sharp juxtapositions, Anastasia Samoylova offers a test for endurance to the iconic American narratives. Her work makes visible the weak spots of this narrative and highlights a need for change — culturally, politically, economically, and climatically.
Anastasia’s work has been selected by curator Nathalie Herschdorfer for the Elles x Paris Photo route of talented female photographers presented at the fair. Also, one of her works is included in the exhibit of the main sponsor J.P. Morgan in the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection Exhibition on display at the fair.
Recent solo exhibitions of Anastasia Samoylova feature the Multimedia Art Museum Moscow, the Orlando Museum of Art, HistoryMiami Museum, The Print Center, the Chrysler Museum of Art, and the USF Contemporary Art Museum, and an outdoor solo installation at Musée des beaux-arts du Locle.
